Artist's statement

Through the lens of a camera I showcase scenes and objects of my natural environment through subtle tones and rich textures in a simple unembellished way. Many of my landscape images are places I pass on a daily basis, most often on my morning
commute from home to my studio office. I don’t care to capture a beautiful scene in as much as I choose to depict the beauty of an ordinary one. I want it to be alluring no matter the subject. The use of basic principles drawn from my graphic design back-
ground is essential when composing an image. Depth, contrast, balance, and texture are all extremely important, but I also aim for a classical, painterly quality and composition. I’m especially interested in low light environments that offer a moody or magical feel.

About the Artist

Marilyn Martin is a full time graphic designer, illustrator, and a part time teacher, who finds photography another means to express herself creatively. For most of her adult life she has displayed artworks in a variety of mediums including digital and traditional photography, illustration, drawing, painting, and graphic works. She received a BFA concentrating in graphic design from SUNY Purchase, and for many years was a senior art director at an advertising agency in Stamford, CT. Marilyn now lives with her husband and their dog, cat, horses, mini pig, and more, all giving her plenty of inspiration to draw upon in a rural setting in Gerry, NY.
