“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience – we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” –
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
I create artwork because the beauty of the process is the best mind altering state I've ever known.
The subject of human beings is an endless source of fascination for me; hence most of my work is figurative and evocative, always focusing on the variety of every day gesture and experience. Some times it's places that still hold the essence of human presence. Some times it's emotions that worry or things that delight the human soul and imagination. But I believe the artwork reflects universal themes felt by all at one time or another.
I paint in many ways, with many emotions. There is always a thread which stitches my work together - such as color and subject. My brush work ranges from detailed strokes to wide explosions. The direction depends on my mood, my subjects’ mood and makes for the diversity and expressive creativity I crave.
I have won many awards since the 'late '60's. I had my first "One Woman Show - A Second Look" in Buffalo, NY in 1970 - after winning 1st Place in Sculpture. Twists and turns later, my work resides in many states and Mexico, in private homes and museums.
I am a patron member of the Portrait Society of America, Artists United, Americans for the Arts and a proud founding member of North Shore Arts Alliance.
About the Artist
I received my B.A. from SUNY Fredonia, NY, majoring in Elementary Art Education, where I studied under Drs Urbscheit, Dorogi and Christian. I received my B.S. from the University of Arizona where my emphasis changed to Behavioral Sciences and Social Work. I received my Masters in Behavioral Science from University of Virginia. I continued studying art through workshops, art leagues and mentors. I am a member of the Portrait Society of America, Americans for the Arts, and Founding Member (serving 7 years as President) of North Shore
Arts Alliance, Inc.
Beginning my first life as an art student, art work was a great source of spiritual healing. Later,
art therapy continued as my main use of the arts, I've taught children's art classes, illustrated a children's book, produced artwork for posters used in the State of Arizona's campaign for foster parents - even illustrated a furniture catalog for a small manufacturer in Massachusetts. I have been commissioned by individuals and charity organizations to produce art work over the years.
My work has been exhibited in galleries in Arizona, California, Virginia, New Mexico, La Paz, Mexico and New York. Pieces can currently be found at “Rocco's” in Fredonia, NY, Sensory Wine and Art Gallery in Ripley, NY, the Art Loft in Chautauqua, NY, local businesses and For Arts Sake in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
I have produced artwork since before I can remember and exhibited since 1968. Early on I received awards which included “Best in Show” from the Buffalo Arts League, resulting in two one woman shows. Over the next twenty five years, although painting part-time, I received five more “Best in Show” awards among other honors.
Upon returning to the WNY area in 1994, my artwork has been shown at:
