Incredulity ; oil on canvas; 36” x 48”
I have been painting since I was in high school. There I was inspired to spend my life studying, making, and teaching art. I spent much of the last decade establishing my art teaching career in the public school system. I minored in painting in college and won various college level shows. I showed several times during the last decade but recently I have jumped into the art world with both feet. Since then I have shown work in juried shows across New York state and in group shows locally.
My first few paintings in this new period of my art career were still-lives. I liked the still-life as a means to develop my technical skill and study the way light falls on the objects. This led to me taking special note of the Baroque old masters and the chiaroscuro technique, which I use very often in my work.
I use art to express my spiritual beliefs and also draw inspiration from spiritual texts and stories. Sometimes I paint things that are inspired by my studies of art history. You may find references to old masters and old master works within my paintings or notice my use of some of their techniques and “catch phrases.” I use art to express my love of history. You may find references to important historical events or periods within my work. I use art to capture beauty. Some of my paintings are just my attempt to capture the beauty of an object or by capturing the object to get the viewer to think about the beauty of it’s use.
I recently bought an etching press and have been developing my skill as a printmaker. I have created drypoints, woodcuts, etchings, and aquatints. I enjoy this medium tremendously, mostly because of the history of it and the old fashioned kind of work it takes to produce them. When I work with printmaking I feel like I am back in the 1600’s . I really feel connected to the old masters doing this work.
I make art because I love art. I love the history, chemistry, innovation, processes and the expression of human emotion that is art.
